Myth or Truth in Dentistry

Teeth cleaning at the dental office will cause damage on your tooth enamel.

A. Professional teeth cleaning at a dental office will not harm tooth enamel. When ultrasonic cleaning instruments are used, the high frequency vibration may cause slight discomfort. Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures after a scaling procedure is due to the removal of tartar (calculus), especially around the gum line of the teeth.
No dental treatment is needed until the tooth starts hurting.

A. When a tooth starts hurting, the nerve of the tooth is usually inflamed.
If this inflammation process is prolonged, the nerve will begin to degenerate and may require root canal therapy. In the case of a periodontal problem, the person may even lose the tooth.
Children’s teeth are not worth treating because they will be replaced by adult teeth.

A. If a child’s tooth is decayed to the point that it is abscessed, the underlying infection will interfere with the development of the adult tooth causing
enamel defect. In certain situations, if the baby tooth is extracted without placing a space-maintaining device in its place, drifting of the remaining teeth may block the proper eruption of adult teeth.
Hard toothbrush is better than soft toothbrush

A. Proper brushing technique requires the massage of the gum line. If a hard
toothbrush is used, it will cause serious irritation of the gums. Furthermore, the hard bristles of the brush will abrade the enamel causing tooth sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.
When using an electric toothbrush, flossing is not needed.

A. An electric toothbrush will facilitate effective teeth brushing when properly used. However, the bristles cannot reach in between the teeth and flossing is the only way to clean the interdental spaces.
When a tooth is extracted, there is no need to replace the missing tooth except for cosmetic reasons.

A. After tooth extraction in the posterior region of the mouth, it is necessary
to replace the missing tooth with a dental prosthesis. Otherwise, adjacent teeth drifting and opposing tooth over eruption may occur. This will lead to bite interference, gum problems and food trapping in between the teeth causing dental decay.
The tooth fairy exists.

A. Yes, in the beautiful minds of children.
